Who is behind Strasbourg's kayak delivery rider?

By Wissam Bachir — founder of AchMedia, acquisition video studio, across France

A delivery rider paddling down the Ill river, delivery bag on his back, under the stunned gaze of passers-by. The scene went around social media, Strasbourg's Facebook groups and the press — all the way to M6's national news. Plenty of people asked the same question: was it real?

A campaign, not an accident

The answer: it was a campaign. Conceived, written and produced by AchMedia, a video creative agency born in Strasbourg, for the restaurant Taikin. An idea strong enough that the city talked about it all on its own.

Guerrilla marketing

The principle is called guerrilla marketing. You don't say "look at our ad" — you create an event people want to talk about, then you let the attention do the work. The kayak generated 1.5 million views for Taikin, and the pickup by M6 and several other media outlets did the rest.

Attention can no longer be bought — it has to be earned.

Not a one-off

It wasn't an isolated stunt. The fake robbery that went viral for Chez Meaux (857.7K views in 48 hours, with queues reported by the restaurant owner the very next day), Bestfood's fake witness appeal, the staged salon argument at Barber Laboratory: the same mechanic, adapted to each business. A local story, a doubt ("is this real or not?"), a resolution that benefits the brand.

Why it works

Why does it work? Because attention can no longer be bought — it has to be earned. TikTok and Instagram feeds are saturated with interchangeable ad content. An improbable scene filmed in your own city, on the other hand, stops the thumb. That is exactly the difference between making videos and building an acquisition engine.
